WTN: Florida Jim's pink

by Dale Williams » Wed Apr 23, 2014 3:00 pm

Last night Betsy had an evening engagement, I quickly threw together teriyaki salmon, leftover risotto, sauteed kale and mushrooms for an early dinner. Wine was the 2012 Cowan Cellars Rose. Dry, crisp, minerally, very pale, delicious and quite food friendly. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I remember being taught that the placement of the apostrophe in the manner you used in your title is a conjunction of Jim and is. He is pink, and so is his rosé. One teacher said the apostrophe after the s would be correct in the case of making the pink the property of Jim. Language ain't what it youz ta bee! :D
I don't know just how I'm supposed to play this scene, but I ain't afraid to learn...

"Florida Jim's pink" parses as Steve said.

"Florida Jim's pink wine", parses as the topic author intended. The contraction of "pink wine" to "pink" in this case changes the meaning of the title.

"Florida Jims' pink" refers to more than one person named Florida Jim.

Yes, this gets us into the subtle issue of semantic parsing. Since "pink" is an adjective but "pink wine" is a (modified) noun, our interpretation of the ambiguous contraction "Jim's" will depend on context: paired with an adjective, it means "Jim is," but paired with a noun it means the possessive. An additional twist is that, in this particular forum, "pink" is likely to be shorthand for "pink [wine]," which allows to draw the correct conclusion about the writer's intent. (Wait, does that mean "writer is intent"? )

Winespeak has turned pink, white and red into nouns. Bubbly is a noun as well.

I think it was Noam Chomsky, the father of formal grammar analysis, who came up with these two sentences:

Time files like an arrow.
Fruit flies like a banana.

And that writer that Steve was referring to had better steer clear of the police or he could be arrested for loitering within tent.

Actually, I have a very nice tan.

BTW, I put the 2013 pink in bottle last Thursday - haven't tasted it yet from bottle (been traveling) but probably will today as FL is heating up - likely 80's today.
(A little help on parsing 80's, please . . .)
