404 Error - Web Page not found!

Wait, that was dumb of me. I should probably have started a new thread, but I wanted to keep the above info intact.

Ignore that old link at the top of this thread. It's dead.

The NEW server - which is identical in appearance and content to the current one right now - is here:

http://forums.wineloverspage.com/

Take a peek, but be aware that when you switch back and forth between the new and current servers you might have to re-log in.

See my note to Jenise. The link at the top of this old thread is no longer functional, and I should have explained that.

Here is a link to the new server:

http://forums.wineloverspage.com/

You MAY have to log in each time you switch between old and new.

The lettering is quite small, how can one enlarge?

Bob,

Once you log in to the new forum there is an A near the top, right of the screen. That toggles font size.

Automatic LogIn

by TomHill » Wed Sep 24, 2014 11:36 am

Robin,
The Auto LogIn no longer seems to be working for my browser (Mozilla FireFox).
When I check the Auto LogIn box when I login, it doesn't seem to remember it after I leave WLDG.
Any suggestions??

Down near the bottom of the page is a link to delete all board cookies. Do that. Re-log in. See if it sticks. If not, delete your bookmark as well, and start fresh.

My browser remembers my name/pswd...so it's not a big deal...just a nusiance.
The auto-login works on all my other sites so I don't think it's a browser setting issue.

The "cookies delete" didn't do it.

Do a new bookmark. That is what finally worked on my iPhone.

Guys, I'm sorry, I know this kind of thing can be frustrating. We didn't expect this, since this phase of updating the forum simply involved porting an exact digital copy of the whole forum onto a shiny new server. But evidently the combination of new IP and new URL drives some browsers crazy. i've had a much easier time with my setup (Mac OS X with Chrome, mostly, and iOS8 on iThings, but David had a much harder time with his iThings, so go figure.

As David said, deleting cookies and doing a new bookmark seems to mostly fix it ... on some devices. But it may take a few tries, and making sure than no "info-droppings" get left behind.

The problem now is going to be helping everyone deal with the vast variety of machines and devices and OS and browsers, all different in their handling of cookies. David's experience suggests that brute force works best - he actually completely deleted his Internet Explorer and re-installed it ... and that worked! (Tom, that may be the best route for you as well.) But again, it's hard to give specific tech advice when browsers deal with the issue in such different ways.

This, too, shall pass. For those with long memories, "It Ain't Netscape!"

Robin,
I got David's suggestion of a new bookmark to work for me now. So I'm happy.

So, first thing to try if you have the problem of not staying logged in:

Look at your bookmarks, and if they don't point to http://forums.wineloverspage.com/, make them do that.

I'm really struggling with this. I'm using the link above but still must log in each time. What a f**$%ing pain in the ass.

Tom, change your bookmarks, delete all of your forum cookies, and if you are unfortunate enough to be using Internet Explorer, consider deleting and reinstalling it.

But seriously, Tom. "Really struggling"? "f**$%ing pain in the ass"?

This, my friend, is what's known as a First World Problem. The long-term unemployed, eating from food pantries or dumpsters ... they are "really struggling." Getting your head cut off by ISIS thugs, or getting shot to death by a militarized US cop for Talking Back While Black, that's a "f**$%ing pain in the ass."

I'm sorry, Tom. I hope we can fix this. But having to log in to an Internet forum is not a "f**$%ing pain in the ass." It just isn't.

Ok, after clearing bookmarks, resetting the url, logging in, then going to Firefox's Tools and resetting my stuff there, it works.
Not your fault, Robin! Technology isn't grown up yet.

Thanks for the report, John. The problem with cookies (in my mind) is that they operate transparently 99 percent of the time. When they act up, I have NO idea what to do with them.
