Forum upgrade coming soon - more at the end of the thread

by Robin Garr » Tue Jan 01, 2008 12:22 pm

(Page to the end of this thread to keep up with current announcements)

A lot of you still haven't been over to the testing area for the forum software upgrade (LINK UPDATED 9/21/14). Please take a moment to do it today, as we'll soon commit to making this change, and we'd like as many of you as possible to take it for a quick test-drive before we throw the switch.

Repeating yesterday's announcement:

As most of you are aware, since we put the ill-fated Netscape experience behind us, we've been running this forum on the excellent open-source forum software, PhpBB. I think just about everyone has been happy with it.

Now, to hail the New Year, we're planning to migrate the forum to the newly updated Version 3 of PhpBB. Don't worry, this is not another Netscape debacle. ;) Version 3 is simply an evolutionary development of our Version 2. It looks similar and works in a similar way - it should not require extensive re-learning. It does contain a few new bells and whistles which we hope you'll enjoy ... you're certainly not required to use them, but you may enjoy discovering them. The more important changes, though, are under the hood and won't be immediately obvious to you, but they will help the forum to run faster, better and more securely (not a trivial matter if you noticed what happened to Wine Therapy last week).

Anyway, I'm posting here, in the Kitchen and Friends & Fun to urge you all to pop over and give the new setup a try. Please notice that it's in beta testing, so don't post anything important over there just yet; it may not be retained when we move the forum in full. Do check it out, though, and I'll be there to answer any questions you may have about the changes and differences.

New Forum here
(You'll need to log in again, using your regular forum user name and password.)

The little scrolling gizmos at the left of some of the messages. Equivalent, I think, to the little colored dots in today's software.

Sometimes it isn't an animated GIF, but an animated whatsis like the twirling hourglass.

You can tell that I'm an accomplished programmer.

I like it! Great to be able to list all your own entries too without having to do a search.

Thanks Sue, perhaps you could tell me what you are referring to!! Everyone here should remember we are not all computer literate.

Which is why you have a chance to test drive it and play around with it and not break anything.

Bob, log into the new forum (see the link in Robin's post on the first item of this thread).
Once you are logged in you will see the forum heading,
The next line says 'Board Index'.
The next line says 'User Control Panel (0 new messages) . View your posts.
Here's a pic of what I am talking about.

Image

'The View your posts' is what I am referring to. When I click on it, I get a listing of every topic that I have contributed to. Sweet.

Further along that line (not shown in the image here), there is an FAQ link, which could be worth your while reading as well.

Have a play. It's very similar to what we have now, but with more gadgets and gizmos and functionality. Of course, you don't have to use these new gadgets and gizmos and functionalities if you don't want to, but some look like fun.
All in all I think it will be a very seamless upgrade for everyone who is used to the functionality here.

Oh - and the User Control Panel is where you change your own preferences.

Cheers,
Sue

By the way - how seamless will the move be? Will my bookmark end up takign me to the new forum, or will I need to re-bookmark? No big deal - just curious.

My plan is to place the new version right where the old is now. I sure don't want to break everyone's bookmarks, not to mention thousands of links from within WLP and around the Web. So in other words, it should be seamless ... unless Mr. ForumAdmin has a surprise in store.

Robin, I have a question for you.

I have had problems tracking down past TNs I have submitted. I posted a TN say on the `03 Malbec Susanna Balbo
If I want to look it up, I would search Malbec Balbo. Do I have to type in author, Bob Parsons Alberta? Where does the "+" work here, do I type in Malbec+Balbo+bob parsons?

Thanks a lot, Doris.

I like that the search engine default is now all words instead of any.

And the Friends and Foes lists- my New Year's resolution is to be on more Foe lists than any other WLDGer!

I can live with it. As long as I am not inconvenienced, I am fine with it. After all, it is all about ME!

Imminent, indeed. The old site was off for a few minutes -- pissed me off it did -- where is service when you need it? But I'm a US air carrier regular, so I cooled my heels, and came back in half an hour after thawing a couple of pipes this 10F evening in New Jersey.

My first post went like a charm.

And, with luck, it's first on the new board.

Bravo, Robin. And thank you very much.

Latest info as of Sept. 19

by Robin Garr » Fri Sep 19, 2014 3:47 pm

The techs at our Internet server have finally found the time to move the forum over to the upgraded internet server, where it's either now or soon will be running on a newer, safer and hotter version of PhpBB.

It appears to me that for most functions - certainly for reading posts - it is perceptibly snappier than the old. Let me know if you agree, and if you see anything funny. Otherwise, we'll proceed pretty briskly to install the security and esthetic upgrade we've been talking about ... and then Facebook login!

Robin, just used that link and got:

404 Error - Web Page not found!

We're sorry, but you have apparently tried to find a URL that does not exist on WineLoversPage.com. Please double-check that the address you entered is spelled, punctuated and capitalized correctly. The page you are trying to reach may have changed, or you may have followed an outdated link.

Wait, that was dumb of me. I should probably have started a new thread, but I wanted to keep the above info intact.

Ignore that old link at the top of this thread. It's dead.

The NEW server - which is identical in appearance and content to the current one right now - is here:

http://forums.wineloverspage.com/

Take a peek, but be aware that when you switch back and forth between the new and current servers you might have to re-log in.
