WTN: Some '05 Burgs (HN, Bouchard, Drouhin, Gouges, Burguet)

by David M. Bueker » Thu Oct 23, 2008 1:20 pm

I attended a tasting of 2005 Burgundies the other day. All of the wines were at least good, but several stood out more than others.

2005 Hudelot-Noellat Bourgogne Rouge
Very bright strawberry and cherry flavors. Good acidity. Drinking very well but with enough fruit to drink over the next 5 years or so.

2005 Bouchard Beaune du Chateau 1er Cru
I'm not sure what vineyards make up this 1er cru blend, but it's a relative value in Burgundy, with rich cherry fruit, good balance and lots of overall material to reward aging and hopefully gain in complexity.

2005 Joseph Drouhin Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
It's a bit oaky right now, but the spice lends a fine counterpoint to very velvety red fruit. The balance is excellent, so I have lots of confidence in its aging potential.

2005 Henri Gouges Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru Clos du Porets St Georges
Try saying that 5 times fast...This is much more rustic and powerful than the preceeding Drouhin (no shock), and it needs cellar time to calm down and knit together. It is packed though, so no worries about potential here either.

2005 Alain Burguet Gefrey-Chambertin "Mes Favorites"
This certainly has lots of fruit and depth, but it also has a whole lot of vanilla oak. I need some convincing here, as curretnly it has a bit of a cherry milkshake thing going on.

Surprising that so much of the '05s is available. I've even seen some on sale; and yet the '06s are still pretty expensive. Thanks for the note on the Drouhin. I'll be picking up some more Gouges just as soon as the '98s I'm sitting on become approachable.

thanks for notes. I got the Gouges at a decent price ($55) recently, plan on trying first one about 2020. :)

2020. Any predictions from you sharpies about when to drink the 02's?

If you come to NY, we can do the 1990 (need to wait on the '93s).

The Zachys sale? That looked pretty good and this 05 Gouges stood out to me among all the other offerings. But I didn't buy any.

Otherwise, interesting to hear about David's experience.

2002 is a more user friendly vintage. I would say that you could open a Gouges in 2015 or so without doing any permanent damage to soft tissues.
