Short notes from tasting of Vinos Pinyol (Terra Alta, Spain) wines at Barcino Gourmet.
Portal 2005 - Ripe fruit. Some earth. Some tannin in the long finish. Good now but still has room to improve.
Portal Blanco 2007 - The nose gives the impression that this is a crisp wine but in the mouth, it's actually rather soft. Easy wine with some obvious sweetness.
Portal 2006 - Very fruity nose. Very ripe sweetness but good balance. Dry finish. Easy, smooth. Medium weight. A crowd pleaser and very approachable. More ready than the 2005.
Sacra Natura 2006 - Organic wine. Menthol. Slightly stinky. Sweet and very tannic. Showing much better now than the first time I tried this about a year ago. Very good.
Sacra Natura 2007 - Toffee, leather, tannic. Good complexity. Needs time to develop but will be better than the 2006.
L'Avi Arrufi 2004 - Sweaty saddle. Ripe plum. Very good now but still has room to improve.
L'Avi Arrufi 2005 - A little hot. Very tannic. Sweet fruit. Needs lots of time but excellent.
Mather Teresina 2003/2004 - Mather Teresina is always a blend of 2 years. Lots of sweet fruit. Very tannic. Leather and smoke. Strawberry. Good complexity. Needs time but will be excellent when mature.
Mather Teresina 2004/2005 - Pastry-like notes on the nose. Extremely tannic. Crunchy fruit. Plum liqueur. Toffee. Amazing complexity and concentration. Needs 5 years minimum to be approachable but tremendously impressive. Outstanding.
We finished with the perennially crowd-pleasing Josefina Pinyol Mistela for dessert.
