WTN: Second Birthday Wine

by Tom N. » Mon Nov 17, 2008 9:28 pm

Deep purple red. Rich cassis and black raspberry nose with layers black fruit. A sensuous wave of black fruit (esp. blackberry and cassis) ripe tannins with a good grip, and nice balancing acidity wash over the midpalatate. A long finish of of smooth but powerful tannins and dark fruit.

Good match with cassoulet especially the lamb. Not as good with the chorizo in the cassoulet, because it brings out the sharp bitterness in the wine. Luckily this cassoulet was 2:1 lamb:chorizo. My wife, Betty, made this dish at my request. This wine was a nice sipper too.

Wine: Beaulieu Vineyards Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2005, 14.3% abv. $25 CAN. I would buy it again.

Hi Brother Bob H,

If you listen to my brother Bob, I am older than dirt and get older than him every year. That means I must be having at least 2 if not 3 birthdays a year!

Beaulieu has been "dumped on" recently in wine geek circles, but I still like their wines.

David,

I agree. WS rated this wine a 78. My taste buds say differently, plus it had a nice rich nose, classic new world cab.
