WTN: 96 Terre Rouge Syrah Sentinel Oak Vyd Pyramid Block

by Salil » Wed Nov 19, 2008 9:17 pm

From Shenandoah Valley, Cali.
At a wine dinner last night, this was one of a number of wines I didn't pay adequate attention to. David Bueker very kindly sent me home with the leftovers - a substantial amount too - which I'm enjoying right now in front of a good game of cricket (David Lole may disagree with that last bit, as the Aussies are reeling, and as New Zealand's taking part :D).

But onto the wine. If this was served blind to me, I wouldn't have a clue that it was Californian. This has the flavour profile I'd expect in an older Northern Rhone with a sauvage character dominated by aged leather, earth and gamey notes with black cherry, plum and olives underneath. The fruit still feels very youthful and there's plenty of structure evident with decent acidity and chewy tannins on the back end. Long, earthy finish that just shows a hint of alcohol (it's 14.5% and is poking its head out a little bit now and then). The richness of fruit and structure gives me the impression this will drink well for some time yet, but right now it's very tasty, delicious on its own and with some grilled chicken and fajitas.

Glad you liked it. I have two more, so maybe I will open another soon.

Hey...the cat just got off my lap, so I can go get more Selbach-Oster. :D

More?!

(If you're talking about that 07 Schlossberg from half bottles, I'll reiterate my point from yesterday - 375s good, 750s better :D)

Indeed, but 375s very convenient for having after polishing off the Marcarini Barolo.

Sounds like your bottle--or, er, David's--is showing even younger than my 98 a few weeks ago. I have one more--delightful wines, and a steal picked off of Winebid at $5 each last year.

Prbably helps that I took posession of it pretty much straight off the delivery truck that was at the wine shop & it then moved to the comfy confines of my cellar within an hour (in winter). It hadn't seen the light of day since.

Wow - you really scored on those!

I don't think I've ever been disappointed in one of these.

One of our favorites. We have already popped our '98s and a '99. Both great with a nod to the '99 for those of you who are sitting on them.

That's where you can do really well on sites like Winebid, having faith in older bottles of atypically ageable wines from wineries few seem to know.
