WTN: Spätburgunder Anniversary

by Rahsaan » Sat Jul 19, 2014 6:08 am

Yesterday my wife and I celebrated our 6th wedding anniversary, which must be the spätburgunder year.

We had a nice dinner alone (i.e. without son) at one of the new (and very good) restaurants in the Bremerhaven harbor, steps from where we were married six years ago. With dinner we had a perfectly delicious bottle of 2010 Stefan Breuer Spätburgunder "S3". It was exactly the kind of spätburgunder I love drinking in Germany. Juicy, crisp, fresh, correct, and very good value (30euros in the restaurant). Probably no need to import this to the States and pay more, but very fine in the local land.

Afterwards, I could not resist trying a glass of the 2008 Rebholz Spätburgunder X-Periment, which is a fortified port-style wine. It was exactly what you would expect of a fortified spätburgunder wine (because I know you have extensive priors on the subject) and went very well with my Variations on Cherry for dessert.

Later we had beer while overlooking the Weser beach, and it was all fine.

Hopefully a judicious oak treatment on the Rebholz. The one and only late harvest, fortified spatburgunder I ever had (back in 2003) was about 700% new oak.

I don't have any definitive info, but quick googling doesn't turn up references to oak, and it didn't taste that way either.

700% is a lot!!

Congrats on your anniversary. I have only visited Bremerhaven to pick up or ship a car with move from USA to Germany or reverse.

Six years already, wow! Warmest wishes to you and Gesche. Recently opened the 2005 Fürst Klingenberger Spätburgunder that I brought back from my time in Germany, a true wowser at the moment.

Congrats again to you and your bride. Hope to cross in-person paths again with you soon (and meet that young tyke!).

Yes, we were reminiscing about the celebrations and thinking about you as well. Nice to hear that the Fürst Spätburgunder was in a good place. I've been meaning to buy some Fürst in Berlin, but have yet to get around to it.

Happy anniversary.
I've recently gotten some Breuer and Furst Spatburgunders, but I believe the Breuers are George, not Stefan.

Stefan is Georg's nephew, started on his own in 2006. But this was the only bottle of his that I've had, so no real knowledge of his wines.

How dare you force your views on fortified Spaetburgunder on me; I am sure it was undrinkable! ;)

Anyway, happy anniversary, especially one that can be celebrated as a couple.
