RIP SF Joe

by Robin Garr » Mon Sep 01, 2014 8:16 pm

This is very sad news for long-time WLDGers: It's being reported on Facebook (by WLDG emeritus Brad Kane) that Joe "SF Joe" Doughtery died suddenly. This is very sad. Joe was a great wine geek and a beautiful human being, one of the long-term forumites who, to the best of my memory, was never involved in a flame war, never mean.

May he be enjoying beautiful wines and great food beyond the stars. Condolences to his family and friends.

Sad to hear because SFJoe was a man in the prime of his life, and especially good at enjoying that prime in every way he thought meaningful.

Curious to mourn a man you have never physically met, but so many of my cherished friends have met him and think so highly of him, and I got to know him from his many posts on the various wine boards and from what people like Coad have said about him, that I felt I did know him, at least from a close distance.

I mourn for him (but I'm not praying for him) and I grieve for all those who knew him intimately and will miss his presence terribly.

I'm proud to have called him friend, a good person, a man for all seasons. Bettylu and I are really saddened. I feel more than I can say. :(

I am still too much in shock and grief to say much that's coherent. I've lost a friend, a colleague, a mentor and a confidant. What others have said is so true, a less mean spirit would be hard to find. I will always recall him with a glass of wine in his hand, a smile on his face and great food somewhere nearby.

RIP

Sad news indeed. I feel that I know the regulars on this board better than many people I meet every day.

O my gosh, I'm so sad to hear this. I never met the man, but he impressed me and I hoped one day that I might have.
Condolences to his family and those who knew him in the flesh.

This is awful news. He was such a generous and warm guy to drink with, so knowledgeable and yet always very down-to-earth and relaxed. I hope he's at peace, wherever he is.

I'm shocked- very sad news. I only met him maybe a half-dozen times, but he was always so generous and genial. In person and online he was so knowledgeable yet not patronizing nor excessively pedantic. My sympathies to those close to him.

Never met the man, but always enjoyed reading his notes and stories, especially his Loire trip notes.

I never met him either, but enjoyed reading his posts. He seemed to have an encyclopedic knowledge of all things wine (especially the Loire) and also seemed like a good soul. Very sad. My deepest condolences to all his friends and family.
