WTN: Mazzocco Zin '88..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Sep 16, 2014 10:29 am

Tried last night w/ low expectations:
1. Mazzocco Zin SonomaCnty (Traditional Style; 1 yr in Fr.oak barrels; Drk: 1989-1992-1994: TM) Healdsburg 1988: Med.color w/ some bricking; rather spicy/raspberry/DCV Zin sone dusty/OV/earthy light toasty/oak some pencilly/oldZin/licorice complex nose; some tart bit metallic/dried out some raspberry/DCV Zin/quite spicy slight dusty/OV flavor w/ light astringent/dried out tannins; med.long tangy/metallic some raspberry/Zin/DCV spicy light toasty/oak finish w/ light astringent tannins; starting to dry out some but still offers up some classic raspberry/DCV Zin spiciness; not nearly as good as the recent DryCreekVnyds Zon OV '88 a week ago, but still holding on. $12.79

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Mazzocco is a wnry that pretty much flies under everybody's radar. It was one time owned by Tom & ?? Mazzocco. This winemaker was ?? Zagunis or some such name from DryCreekVnyds. It is now owned by Ken&Diane Wilson, who also own WilsonVnyds there on WestDryCreekRd. They make a whole bunch of vnyd-designate Zins. I've not tried anything from Mazzocco in yrs, so don't know how they are.
This wine, nothing profound, went perfectly well w/ my roasted Gypsy/Bull'sHorn/Lipstick peppers w/ a ton of fresh basil & blue cheese dressing. The PeachyCanyon Dusi Zin '88 was pretty much DOA.

Mazzocco is now impossible to distinguish from any of the other Wilson wineries. I'm not much of a fan of their style.
