TN: 1994 Barolo and South African Red

Decided to try a couple of fully mature wines over a couple of nights.

1994 Fratelli Seghesio Barolo Vigneto la Villa – colour is still quite dark, and the nose is tobacco, dried apricot and hints of tar with some floral (violets? Roses?) coming in after some airing. Not a subtle wine but a tasty one and showing well at this age.

1994 Rust en Vrede Estate – this wine is made from a blend of cabernet and merlot, but usually with a shot of syrah added. It is much lighter in colour than the Barolo, and the fruit is markedly berry – raspberry, I think, in the nose, and with some mint showing up after a bit of airing. Excellent fruit still evident on palate and medium length with clean acidity and very soft tannins. Good wine.
