When in Japan, I often saw fish eaten as live sashimi. And there was a snake restaurant in Guangzhou that brought the live snake to our table, opened its belly, and pulled out a bile sac, the contents of which all but I drank with relish.

I eat food routinely that's still alive. Plant and fungus kingdoms, though.

All raw fruits and vegetables are still alive when we eat them.

A lot of cheeses still have active molds or bacteria colonies in them when we eat them. And some forms of traditional Gorgonzola reportedly have live nematodes.

As for higher animals, this makes me think back to my maternal grandmother, who would eat almost anything but drew the line at frog's legs that twitched when you salted them.

There is always the Chinese preparation of fish that has the body fried and the mouth still opening and closing when it comes to table....

I will admit that I have actually eaten live fish. I like to go fishing and on several occasions, I have taken a few slices of living Fluke or Tuna right then and there, and it is fabulous.

Not sure I could do the octopus (I am not a big fan of it even when dead and cooked...too rubbery). Grill baby octopus is yummy, but don't think I could swallow one alive.

As for bugs...I just can't do it. I am not sure why, considering I love lobster, crabs, crawfish, escargot, etc...and they are really just big bugs.

Why? Did it taste better without any relish? Maybe a little wasabe condiment might have helped?

I'm with you on that. Despite my carnivorous tendencies and predilection for very rare steak, I, too, could be a vegetarian, when I really contemplate it, and the thought of eating something alive which is sentient, well ... Now, don't tell me you've been talking to the fungi again and that they've been talking back ... again!

Folks in some parts have been known to eat monkey brains out of the head of a live animal. I am not so sure that I could do that.

I used to eat scrambled eggs and brains for breakfast. I've also had pickled calves brain with my ante-pasta, but that was years ago before everyone was worried about "mad cow" disease.

I am not so sure that I would eat calves or lamb brains anymore even if I knew they were cooked.

I once asked Jenise if she'd ever had brains and she told me she hadn't. In retrospect I wonder if that was an entirely culinary discussion.....Image

It wouldn't make any difference. Cooking has no effect on the prions that cause C-J disease.

Interesting, because I can recall seeing a rather credible documentary that showed film clips of the actual "feast."

Me, too. There was a special table with a hole cut out of the center that held the monkey. I remember one of the women conking the critter on the head.

Just because something is moving does not mean that it is alive! Octopus, like lobsters and similar sea life, have distributed nervous systems. From Wikipedia: “An octopus has a highly complex nervous system, only part of which is localized in its brain. Two-thirds of an octopus's neurons are found in the nerve cords of its arms, which have a remarkable amount of autonomy. Octopus arms show a wide variety of complex reflex actions arising on at least three different levels of the nervous system.” In the dish in the video, the head of the octopus was removed leaving the tentacles to function on their own. I have seen lobsters move their tails even after their head is removed.

There is also peristaltic action in muscle tissue. I have seen the the flesh of catfish twitch—even after they were gutted and cut into steaks. That's what I call fresh (but still quite dead).
