by John F » Sun Sep 30, 2007 11:58 pm

We are having some folks over for dinner and have our menu scoped out but just want somehting really simple for dessert. We were thinking of vanilla with some type of interesting topping.....something chocolate, kahlua, berryish etc

My favorite topping for vanilla ice cream is a hot fudge-habanero sauce.

Digression: I just love all things vanilla. I just don't get the association of over-oaked wines with vanilla. It tastes nothing like vanilla. If it did, I would like it, and I certainly don't!

Mexican Cajeta, essentially dulce de leche made from goat's milk. It's great on ice cream.

Serve the vanilla ice cream in oversized cappucino cups and top each serving with a shot of hot espresso.

Toffee Surprise

1 quart vanilla ice cream
4 (1-oz.) English toffee-flavored candy bars, coarsely crushed
¼ cup Kahlua or other coffee-flavored liqueur

Spoon ice cream and crushed toffee bars evenly into for parfait glasses or dessert dishes. Just before serving, top each with 1 tablespoon Kahlua. Yield: 4 servings.

- Southern Living’s Easy Weeknight Favorites

Notes: I use 4 oz. ice cream and ½ candy bar per dessert (Heath Bar).

Homemade apricot brandy from the Wachau. Too bad it's almost all gone!

Why not have Bananas Foster? Melt butter and brown sugar / add sliced bananas / remove from heat and add rum and flambé / pour over ice cream while flaming.

What he said!
I always get the name confused between Affogato (this dessert - lit. 'drowned' according to my dictionary) and Affollato (crowded).

It's a really great dessert from the simplest of ingredients.

Sounds like you got quite a few good suggestions. Howie's one for peanut butter is good, too. What I've done there is melt some peanut butter in the microwave, pour it over vanilla ice cream and add some chocolate sauce. Yum!

Be sure and let us know what you did!

Oh, I should have thought of that! I love Frangelico. In fact, I had some after dinner tonight, but with a great spice cake.
