over ripe pears

by Ed Draves » Sun Oct 07, 2007 8:49 am

We bought some pears that ripened much too quickly. Any ideas of what to do with them? They are going to be brown soon.
Thanks!

Pear sorbet - leave it frozen until you need it.

Thank you all. I think my kids will love the pear butter. I found a recipe for a crock pot version http://www.recipecottage.com/crockpot/pear-butter.html
Pear sorbet appeals to me. I think the kids will win this time but I'm going to have my eyes open for over ripe pears at a good price.

Or just stew them either on their own, or with some apples (and as much sugar as suits your preference), and then freeze them in plastic bags. This is what we do with the in-laws' glut of apples and pears that they get each year from the trees at the end of their garden.

Once defrosted, they're still lovely either with natural yoghurt, or as a crumble filling (although you may need to drain some of the juices off before putting into the crumble, which makes a lovely drink on its own :D ).
