Oh, this is sooo difficult. I know as soon as I hit "submit," I'll think of four completely different things I'd rather have.

1) Russet potatoes to bake and eat with plenty of butter, and freshly ground black pepper
2) Chilean seabass (AKA: Patagonian toothfish)
3) Brocolli with garlic, evoo and red pepper flakes
4) An ongoing supply of Tollhouse cookie dough (with walnuts) for eating raw and/or baking

Pasta Carnonara.

Chicken and Dumplings

This sandwich at a local shop with a great baguette, goat cheese brie, applewood smoked bacon and arugula...

One sweet thing...an italian almond tart the same shop makes... barely sweet.


Tomorrow's list will be different.

Barb, this isn't about today's cravings!

What are the things that live deep in your soul that would make you happy and satisfy you every day? Basic things? Childhood things?

My list was a combo of adult/childhood. I never tasted a lobster til I was out of my parent's house, but I really do think I could eat it every day without getting tired of it. Bacon. And a great salad. They're rare. My father's Mexican cornbread is soooo not high class, but I love it.

The Big Salad from City Cafe. Dozens of healthy and tasty salad ingredients, and it comes with a yummy Japanese-style ginger dressing. I don't think I'd ever get tired of this.

Pizza with everything. It incorporates bread, tomatoes and cheese and toppings. And of course, if I interpret "everything" literally, what a great cheat! (Uh oh, here comes Karen ... )

Karen, no, I don't, but it's similar to the Benihana salad dressing, which is probably not all that authentic ethnic Japanese but tastes good. :) I've tried to approximate it on occasion with a simple vinaigrette of orange and lemon juice, peanut oil, and a lot of fresh ginger juiced through a garlic press. (I never use the garlic press for garlic, but it makes a really nice ginger juice. ;) )

I expect a Google search for "Behihana salad dressing" would probably come up with some lookalikes.

Okay, point taken, Karen...

So Carbonara would stay.

I would add a baked potato (truly baked, not zapped) with butter, sour cream, chives and lots and lots of S and P

I might then include something totally comforting like...cassoulet...no, no, I would add homemade chicken pot pie...

Then roast chicken with roasted veg around it: carrots, parsnips, onions, potatoes..gravy made from the pan drippings...

Me? All about the carbs apparently.

Can I come to your house some time? We serve Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia Ice Cream occasionally on int'l flights in World Business Class, and I am not a sweet freak, but this one gets my attention every time.

The pizza sounds exquisite!

Peas ... like 'em! A lot.

I love this dressing too. It showed up in the late 70's as the Benihana Ginger Salad Dressing in either Gourmet or Bon Appetite.

1/2 C soy oil
1/4 C soy sauce
1/3 C diced onion
1/4 C diced celery
3 Tbsp + 1 tsp rice vinegar
2 Tbsp, peeled, diced ginger
2 tsp sugar
1-1/2 tsp lemon rind
1/2 tsp catsup
1/4 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp Aji-no-moto (optional)

Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until pureed. Store in the refrigerater in a covered container.

I didn't think my list would change since grapes, tomato salads and chicken noodles are foods that for me are almost more about need than want. Tacos are almost as basic, but the ingredients are not. There's really no one taco that I prefer to all others. Yesterday, carnitas sounded good so that's what I mentioned. But overnight, I've had a change of heart: I want shrimp tacos. I would tire of pork before I'd tire of shrimp, and I already have a meat in the chicken noodles.

And then: I have ulterior motives. I am presuming that I could pull the shrimp out of my tacos and wrap it in lettuce and use the lime wedges, evoo and salt to make a little salad. Or I could chop them and mix them with some of the farfalle from the chicken noodles to make a shrimp salad. Too, the chicken out of my chicken noodles would make an excellent alternative taco filling that I could top with a pico de gallo made from the onion, cilantro and lime juice in the tacos and some tomatoes borrowed from the caprese salad.

Karen's going to kill me, isn't she.

Peas
Apples

A favorite diet yesterday, years ago, go to go for many more years (I hope).

Per Se is great fun, but that's entertainment. My list is pure nutrition and great joy.
