Let's hear it for salt--or sweet

Now that the thread about salt has generated a lot of heat and salty responses, let's pose the question, do you prefer salt or sweet?

If I were faced with, let's say a bowl of potato chips and a bowl of candy, I'd go for the chips. How 'bout you?

Great topic, Larry! I'm a salt'n'crunch kind of guy myself. I'd much rather have a pretzel than a candy bar.

Definitely both. I'm a popcorn and Snow Caps kinda gal.

Crunchy and salty for sure. However, I can walk by Nut's on Clark in the MDW airport without getting a bag of cheese and caramel corn. Love that stuff!

I love both, but salty/crunchy tends to tip the scales (pun not intended, but very relevant) since I would reach for the chips over a candy bar or a bacon & cheese sandwich over a PB&J. Now I do like ice cream for my evening snack...reduced fat, of course.

First salty then sweet.

Yep. At first, I thought it sounded gross. But, a coworker convinced me to try the 75% cheese/25% caramel mix. Love it.

Traci, I used to love the popcorn balls a neighbor made on Halloween, and where most were fairly sweet, hers were butter-salty and sweet at the same time. Loved them. Caramel and cheese probably achieves that same contrast while delivering both with the kick of specific flavors. On that level, I can kind of imagine the appeal. Kind of.

Along the salty lines...try this...it sounds kind of weird, but dill pickles and cheddar cheese are a great match. First time my wife told me about it I thought she was nuts, but it really does work.

Salt is a sort of antidote to sweetness. In New England, when they make maple syrup candy during the sap boiling (a 40:1 ratio!) by pouring some into the snow, kids will eat the candy until they're almost sick. Out comes a dill pickle as a palate cleanser, then back to the candy.
