What's your favorite Digital probe?

by Maria Samms » Thu Jan 17, 2008 3:59 pm

Hi All,

I have tried several digital probes/thermometers and haven't been thrilled with any of them. Most of the probes only last a few times, not too mention a majority can't be used in oven temps over 392 Degrees Farenheit. So I am curious to know what brands you like/use, what are their maximum oven temps and how long have they lasted?

My urologist. (Ba-dum-dum!)

Thank you, thank you, you've been a great audience; I'll be here all week.

I would look for something that has a probe which is detachable. I.e., you leave the sensor in place with a dangling plug, then attach the readout unit when you open the oven, then disconnect when you close it. There are some ovens made which accommodate this- mine has a place to actually plug in the probe directly and use the oven display. Digital electronics (as opposed to sensors) don't like heat.

Boys...sheesh!

Anyway...thanks Stuart. I am pretty sure that all my thermometers are detachable, like you describe. I put the probe bit in the meat...then plug the probe into the digital thermometer which is located outside the oven. However, the probe part seems to break pretty quickly (not the digital thermometer part). Do you have a brand you could recommend?

Maria, Maria, Maria. Girlfriend, don't you know by now how the men on this forum are (especially Stuart)?

I have a Pyrex Professional with the detachable probe. I even use this when I grill.

On a more serious note, we had a Polder with a long metal cord between the probe and the digital readout. Looked like it was going to be a pretty neat unit, but it only remained operational for a month or so. I haven't gotten around to replacing it yet, although the Pyrex one sounds like a candidate.

C'mon, girl. You did title this post "What's your favorite Digital probe?"

I have to say that I'd never probe hot meat with my digit ! I'd burn my fingers !!

Sorry I can't offer suggestions, the only digital thermometer I have is for candy making. I've stuck it into a roast before, but only once it's out of the oven...

I always probe hot meat with my digits. But I cook like a pro so this is only natural.

Digital probe......hmmmmm......maybe we should merge this with the rubber glove thread.

I have two. One came with our new oven. There's a socket in the oven, and you plug the end of the probe in, and the other end goes in the meat. You program it through the control panel, and when the meat reaches the desired temp, the oven shuts off. Sounds kind of cool, but I've yet to use it. I'm just used to doing things the way I always have, and my trusty pocket thermometer is usually good enough.

I also have a programmable one, with a long wire which leads from the meat probe to the control unit. The wire is thin enough so that the oven door will close on it - it works pretty much like the built in one. You set a desired temp, and when the meat approaches that temp, the unit starts to beep.

I've used it once in the house. It comes in handy when I'm smoking something on the outdoor grill - it makes it easy to keep an eye on temps inside the cavity without having to open and close the lid a million times.

I still say use your fingers and eyes. I have used digital thermometers in tests before that were way off the mark. Look and feel never fails me.

Right index.

The probes used with digital thermometers do seem to be unreliable, don't they? I saw a digital oven thermometer for sale that was intended to be used for extended periods up to 500F. Other than that I just buy replacements for my Polder, which at least gives accurate temperatures.

Just to show that there's no hard feelings Maria, I'm going to describe ours. It curves out from the cable end and measures about 7 inches, it's very pointy and hard at the end, all the better to uh, probe. Stuart would not like it at all. It's a Williams-Sonoma with of bunch of high tech stuff like alerts we never use. These are like cameras, with auto mode. In fact, there must be one somewhere that can talk to the oven and turn it off when the meat is done? Or maybe there are ovens that have built in probes. There must be.
