RCP: Potato Gratin - classic winter dish!

by Martin Barz » Wed Feb 20, 2008 10:58 am

Today, I have made one of my classic winter dishes.......

Note: the potatoes need a lot of salt. This gratin is a wonderful partner for all lamb-dishes, steak or solo in winter times with a good german beer. Classic would be also to add some nutmeg to the potatoes.

Ingredients (serves 5-6):
1kg potatoes
250-300g Comté or Gruyére cheese
500ml cream

Ever since dinner at a little bistro in Basel, Martin, I've added a clove of garlic to the same basic recipe you prepare here. Isn't it heavenly? And you know what, it's so good and so rich, that though I agree with you that it goes well with red meats, I'd just as soon skip the meat. A gratin, a crisp green salad and a loaf of baguette--that's the meal!
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Oh yes Jenise, it is a heavy dish, BUT the right meal for very cold days!

You´re right about the garlic, there are gratin-recipes with the recommendation to rub the
gratin-form with a fresh clove garlic before you add the potatoes.
