RCP: Quick morning smoothie

by Mike Filigenzi » Mon Mar 24, 2008 12:36 pm

My daughter is like me - she doesn't want anything to eat in the morning until around 10 AM or so. This makes it difficult to get her to eat breakfast before taking her in to school in the morning. My wife found this smoothie recipe in one of Nigella Lawson's books (don't know which one) and it's been a real hit. Then again, how could it not be? It appears to be reasonably nutritious and gives her enough energy to get through most of the morning, anyway. Only pre-prep involves freezing the banana.

For one smoothie:

1 frozen banana
2/3 cup milk
4 teaspoons malt powder (preferably chocolate flavored)
1 tablespoon peanut butter
1 tablespoon honey

I usually dump everything but the honey into the blender and start it whizzing. Once it's finished its initial bumping, I add the honey while it's running.

You could skip the pre-prep and just put a fresh banana in there. It won't be as cold but would still taste great.

Definitely a good alternative if there are no frozen bananas around. That iciness is very nice, though.

Mike, this is a little off topic, but our granddaughter 3 & 7 love frozen table grapes. seems to me that they eat them by the pound.

I tried this today, and as usual I had to improvise. I used chocolate ovaltine instead of chocolate-flavored malt powder. I got a bit heavy handed on the peanut butter and honey so it was a little strong, but definitely something I would try again.

Thanks for posting.
