Foul September weather compromises this year's Concord harvest

by Paul B. » Sun Oct 08, 2006 9:04 pm

Just the very reason why I gave up on my plans to make a high-quality dry Concord wine at home this year, opting instead for Cayuga White.

Paul,

I guess I have too much of a mental association of concord wine with sweet Kosher wine.

But maybe I should stock up on grape jelly?

Paul, I had sent my Dad (who lives in Western NY) to your site and he was planning on trying to make the dry concord this autumn. He told me this past weekend that it wasn't gonna happen. :(

Cynthia - I really sympathize!! I really, really wanted to do dry Concord this year too. But some things really are out of our control - Mother Nature, cranky as she is this year, has the final say.

But hey - I didn't come out of it all that badly: I'm making my first-ever batch of Cayuga!

I'll have to ask Dad what all he made/is making this year. He usually has several carboys of wine going, plus mead.

I will be bottling my first batch of cherry wine this weekend. It's a tad sweeter than I would have liked, but still pretty darn good.

How did you fare in the snowstorm last night, Paul? It's brilliantly sunny with cobalt skies and a high of 70F here. :) (Dad didn't appreciate that weather update this morning.)

Cynthia, I was shocked to hear of all the snow in Niagara - we got completely bypassed here in Toronto. Just a bit of frost this morning, but no accumulation at all! Lucky, I suppose.

Anyway, Mother Nature is a bit nuts this year. September was cold and rainy, and now this ...
