Anyone use Medlar ?

by Christina Georgina » Wed Jan 09, 2013 8:49 pm

After 4 years my tree produced about 5#. Now fully bletted they are ready for processing into a medlar-tarragon jelly for savory use. Anxious to see how this works. Any advice out there ?

HAve had so much fun with these old fashioned fruits....quince, medlar, gooseberry....guess who is drooling over the fruit catalogs... :D

Wow, thought I'd heard of most things but medlar is brand new to me. Must go look these up!

Medlar is the one I've not had. Jam makers Wilkins & Son produce a small amount of medlar jelly every year from their own trees but I've never found it on sale - though I've had their quince and their mulberry, (and gooseberry of course, but that's not an uncommon fruit here).

We have a couple of gooseberry bushes in the garden and I just love goosegogs..

My grandmother had a quince (japonica) bush --but I can't remember if I have had medlars. It seems to me that, at some point, I had medlar jelly. This looks familiar but I just don't know...
