Quality Price Ratio Wines: 2002 Australian Shiraz

Comparatively the average score for the 2002 vintage is 90 points with an average $38 price tag while the 2001 averages close behind with 89 and a $37 price tag. 2001 has 11 great values while 2002 has only three. But the vintage values are misleading separately because when you combine the two vintages, 2002 has 11 great values while 2001 has only eight.

With the combined vintages there are great values to be had at all price points. At $55, the 2002 Two Hands, Shiraz McLaren Vale Lily's Garden costs just 44 percent of the average price for a 95-point scoring wine. Quality Price Ratio Wines: Vintage and Non-Vintage Champagne

The good news is that Champagne offers great values at several price points. And by some happy coincidence, only about $10 separates a 90-point wine from a 91, a 91 from a 92, and a 92 from a 93. Suddenly, the idea of trading up (or down) seems a lot more accessible.

For example, the J LaSalle Special Club, at $50, is 34 percent of the average $145 price tag for a 93-rated Champagne. Among wines with a 92 score, there are three great values at $40: Diebolt-Vallois Brut Blanc de Blancs Prestige, Legras Blanc de Blancs and Tarlant Brut Cuvee Louis - all have QPR of 42 percent. $32 nets the always popular Bollinger Special Cuvee Brut, a 91 point wine with a QPR of 37 percent. And finally, at $21, Montaudon Brut averaged 90 points, earning it a 43 percent QPR. $21. At that price, you shouldn't need a reason to celebrate. Quality Price Ratio Wines: 2000 and 2001 Bordeaux

The wine press went ga-ga over the 2000 Bordeaux vintage with 15 percent of the wines scoring 93 or higher and 52 percent scoring 90 or higher . As you'd expect, prices rose with all the lavish praise. The 2001 Bordeaux vintage didn't fare as well with only 6 percent receiving 93 points and above and 45 percent receiving over 90 points. Luckily the 2001 prices were substantially lower with a $54 average price for a 2001 Bordeaux compared to $96 for a 2000 Bordeaux (average of same wines). But don't let the higher prices of 2000 Bordeaux mislead you. Even though the price of the 2000 is considerably higher, most of the quality-price-ratio wines are still 2000 Bordeaux, even at today's prices.

With the combined vintages there are great values to be had at every price-point. At $125, the 2000 Château Leoville Barton from St. Julien costs just 39 percent of the average price for 96-point-scoring wine. At $43, the 2000 93-point Clos du Marquis from St. Julien is 37 percent of the average. At $22, the 2001 Château la Tour Carnet from the Haut-Médoc region is 41 percent of other 91-point wines. At the bargain end of $13 the 2000 Château Plaisance from St. Emilion is 47 percent of the average for an 88 point Bordeaux. You will find those and other great values highlighted in the 2000/2001 Bordeaux issue at QPRwines.com.
