Morton Estate 1997 Hawke's Bay Sauvignon Blanc ($15.99)
Pale gold. Good citrus and green-chile aromas, typical of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but a bit more muted than the "outrageous" Cloudy Bay style. Tart and fresh flavor, full-bodied white fruit. Good, balanced white wine. U.S. importer: (April 7, 2000)
Chateau Graville-Lacoste 1998 Graves ($10.99)
Light straw color. Grass and minerals and quite a musky whiff of overipe melons. Dry and crisp on the palate, lemony acidity and minerals, long and clean, with that musky-melon character playing a constant counterpoint. Odd, interesting, good value. FOOD MATCH: Both wines were served with pan-grilled swordfish and scallops. The lean acidity of the French wine made it perhaps a slightly better match, although both served well enough.
