Carmen 1996 Maipo Valley (Chile) Grande Vidure Cabernet Reserve ($10.99)
Inky dark garnet, with pleasant cherry-berry aromas that invite a taste. Ripe, juicy fruit flavors, full and fruity-sweet at first, dries out with crisp acidity in the finish. Grande Vidure is Carmen's name for the old Carmenère grape, which was widely used in France 200 years ago but lost popularity, now being grown by Carmen in Chile and just about nowhere else. FOOD MATCH: Not bad with an Italian-style T-bone braised with Marsala and red wine and a touch of fennel seed, but the robust flavors of the sauce almost called for a huskier wine.
