Abbaye de Tholomies 1994 Minervois Réserve ($9.99)
Very dark garnet, blackish-purple at the center. Blackberries, leather and anise in an earthy, complex combo of aromas and flavors; juicy fruit cloaks firm tannic astringency on the palate. Accessible, still youthful, will benefit from cellar time. A bit youthful, as is the style of Minervois, but it's an interesting and appealing wine. I believe this is a closeout sale price; this product would normally retail somewhat higher. U.S. importer: International Gourmet Corp., Atlanta. (Sept. 4, 2000)
FOOD MATCH: Fine with grilled lamb steaks.
Commanderie de la Bargemone 1998 Coteaux d'Aix en Provence ($9.99)
Dark ruby color, with pleasant red-fruit aromas of strawberries and plums. Tart, light and dry, not particularly complex but a crisp and quenching food wine, not unlike a good Beaujolais. U.S. importer: Hand Picked Selections, Warrenton, Va. (Sept. 5, 2000)
FOOD MATCH: Makes a good pairing with a light summer meal of fresh tomatoes, basil and mozzarella.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. |
