Terra Rosa 1997 Valle Central (Chile) Cabernet Sauvignon ($10.99)
This is the California wine that moved to South America. Once the label for Laurel Glen's "affordable" Cabernet and sourced from California grapes, this became a Chilean wine last year after wine maker Patrick Campbell theorized that South American Cabernet could produce a better wine in the price range he wanted. The results? Reasonably persuasive. Well structured and balanced, it seems fair for the price if not a standout bargain. It's an inky dark garnet in color, with ripe cherry-berry fruit aromas and spicy notes. Full black fruit and spice appear in the flavor, a little soft at first, but acidic structure shows up as the wine crosses the palate. It finishes clean and tart, with soft tannins suggesting at least short-term aging potential. Importer: Laurel Glen Winery, Santa Rosa, Calif. (Sept. 19, 1998)
