Weingut Loiben 1997 Loibner Loibenberg (Wachau) Grüner Veltliner "L" ($19.99)
Clear, pale gold, with a fresh green-pea scent, characteristic of Grüner Veltliner. Crisp, fresh white-fruit flavors, apples and exotic notes of kiwis and carambola (starfruit); good acidic structure and balance. Very pleasant wine, but needs some development time to justify a $20 price tag. U.S. importer: Michael Skurnick Wines, Syosset, N.Y.; a Terry Theise Estate Selection. (Dec. 8, 1999)
FOOD MATCH: Very fine match with a simple potage bonne femme, a rustic soup of potatoes and leeks.

All my wine-tasting reports are consumer-oriented. In order to maintain objectivity and avoid conflicts of interest, I purchase all the wines I rate at my own expense in retail stores. |
